How To Make A Pattern From an Old Cushion

How to Make a Outdoor Cushion Pattern

(From an Existing Patio Cushion or Directly From the Frame)

When outdoor cushions are rectangular, measurements are simple. But when shapes get curved, angled, trapezoidal, or irregular — a paper pattern is often the most accurate way to ensure a perfect fit.

Patterns are especially helpful when:

  • The shape is unusual or asymmetrical
  • Corners are curved
  • The frame isn’t perfectly square
  • It’s a corner sectional piece
  • The original cushion no longer exists

The good news? You don’t need special tools. Just patience and careful tracing.

Option 1: How to Make a Pattern From an Existing Cushion

This works best when the old cushion still holds its shape reasonably well.

Step 1: Lay the Cushion Flat

Place it on a hard, flat surface (not carpet).

Smooth it gently — do not stretch it.

Step 2: Trace the Finished Size

Using kraft paper, contractor paper, or taped-together printer sheets:

  • Trace around the cushion edge carefully.
  • Hold your pencil straight up and down.
  • Do not angle the pencil inward or outward.

If the cushion has piping, trace the seam line, not the outer edge of the piping.

Step 3: Mark Key Information

Clearly label:

  • FRONT
  • BACK
  • LEFT / RIGHT
  • Top surface
  • Thickness
  • Cushion style (boxed, knife edge, etc.)

If it’s part of a sectional, label the orientation (e.g., “Left arm facing”).

Important Note:

Old cushions may have compressed or distorted over time.
If the cushion appears misshapen, it may be better to create the pattern from the frame instead.

Option 2: How to Make a Pattern From the Frame

This is ideal when:

  • The old cushion is gone
  • The old cushion is severely distorted
  • The shape is built-in or recessed
  • It’s an odd-shaped corner sectional

Step 1: Cover the Seating Surface With Paper

Use heavy kraft paper or contractor paper.

Tape multiple sheets together if needed.

Lay the paper flat across the entire seating area.

Step 2: Trace the Exact Frame Shape

Using a pencil:

  • Press the paper gently into corners.
  • Trace the exact inside edge of where the cushion will sit.
  • For recessed frames, trace the interior opening.

Keep your pencil vertical and trace slowly.

Step 3: Check for Square

Measure:

  • Front width
  • Back width
  • Left depth
  • Right depth

If dimensions differ, the frame is slightly out of square — this is common.

Patterns compensate for that better than raw measurements alone.

Step 4: Label Everything Clearly

Mark:

  • FRONT
  • BACK
  • LEFT / RIGHT
  • Room name (if multiple cushions)
  • Thickness desired
  • Any cut-outs (posts, hinges, outlets)

If it’s a sectional corner piece, clearly mark orientation.

Step 5: Cut the Pattern

Cut along your traced line carefully.

Then place the cut pattern back into the frame to test:

  • Does it sit flat?
  • Are there gaps?
  • Is it too tight?

Adjust if necessary.

Special Section: Sectional Corner Pieces

Corner sectionals are rarely simple squares.

They may be:

  • Angled 45°
  • Rounded
  • Pie-shaped
  • Trapezoidal

Patterns are strongly recommended here.

Always:

  • Label orientation
  • Identify which side connects to which seating section
  • Take photos of the frame from above

Seam Allowance (Do Not Add It)

Important:
Do not add seam allowance to your pattern.

Trace the finished size only.

Our team accounts for seam construction during fabrication.

When to Send Photos

Whenever you create a pattern, include:

  • A photo of the pattern laid flat
  • A photo of the pattern inside the frame
  • A top-down photo of the furniture
  • Measurements written on the pattern

Photos eliminate confusion and ensure accuracy.

Common Pattern Mistakes

  • Adding seam allowance
  • Not labeling orientation
  • Stretching the paper while tracing
  • Forgetting to test-fit the cut pattern
  • Tracing the outside of piping instead of seam line

Quick Pattern Checklist

✔ Use sturdy paper
✔ Trace with pencil held vertical
✔ Label FRONT / BACK / LEFT / RIGHT
✔ Do not add seam allowance
✔ Test fit before sending
✔ Include photos
