How To Clean Outdura Outdoor Fabrics

How to Clean Outdura Fabric

Outdura is a solution-dyed acrylic performance fabric, which is why it’s a strong choice for outdoor cushions, replacement patio cushions, seat cushions, back cushions, and outdoor throw pillows. The “secret” to keeping Outdura looking new is the same one we preach for every great outdoor fabric: brush off dry debris often + clean spills fast.

Dirt, pollen, sunscreen, and food residue are what cause most long-term staining issues—not the fabric itself. The sooner you clean, the easier it comes out.

Start Here: New Spill on Outdura (Fast Cleanup)

When something just happened (drink, sauce, muddy paw print, sunscreen drip):

  1. Blot—don’t rub liquid spills with a clean, dry cloth.

  2. For oil-based spills, sprinkle an absorbent (cornstarch or baby powder) over the spot, let it sit 15–30 minutes, then lift it off with a straight edge.

  3. Spray with mild soap + water (details below).

  4. Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue.

  5. Air dry only.

Why we repeat “rinse thoroughly” forever: leftover soap attracts dirt and can leave rings—especially on outdoor cushions that live outside.

Your Go-To Cleaning Mix (Mild Soap + Water)

  • Mix: 1/4 cup mild soap per 1 gallon lukewarm water
(Think: gentle dish soap or mild laundry soap—no harsh detergents.)

Avoid: aggressive detergents, abrasive cleaners, hard scrub pads, or stiff brushes.

Outdoor Cushion Cleaning: Removable Covers (Zippered Cushions)

Option A: Hand Washing (Best for most Outdura cushion covers)

  1. Mix 1/4 cup mild soap per 1 gallon lukewarm water

  2. Soak the cover or apply the solution

  3. Lightly agitate with a sponge or very soft bristle brush

  4. Rinse thoroughly

  5. Air dry

Option B: Machine Washing (Only if your cushion construction allows it)

If your cushion covers are removable and the cushion build allows safe removal:

  1. Close all zippers

  2. Machine wash cold, delicate cycle

  3. Use mild detergent (normal amount)

  4. Air dry only (no dryer)

Important: Not every cushion is built the same. If removing the cover risks damaging the insert or the construction, stick with hand washing or seam-to-seam cleaning (below).

Outdoor Cushion Cleaning: Non-Removable Upholstery (Fixed Cushions)

If the fabric can’t be removed:

  1. Mix 1/4 cup mild soap per 1 gallon lukewarm water

  2. Apply solution and let it soak in for a few minutes

  3. Use a soft bristle brush, cleaning seam-to-seam

  4. Rinse thoroughly

  5. Air dry

Pro tip: Seam-to-seam cleaning prevents water rings

Spot-scrubbing in circles can create a “clean halo.” Cleaning the full panel—from seam to seam—helps the fabric dry evenly and look uniform.

Oil-Based Stains (Sunscreen, Grease, Salad Dressing, BBQ)

Oil stains need a two-step approach:

  1. Absorb first: cornstarch/baby powder 15–30 minutes, then lift off

  2. Clean: mild soap + water

  3. Rinse thoroughly and air dry

If an oily “shadow” remains:

  • Repeat the process, and consider a fabric-safe degreaser (used carefully), followed by a very thorough rinse.

Mold & Mildew on Outdura Outdoor Cushions

Outdura resists mildew, but mildew can grow on dirt and debris left on the surface—especially in humid or shaded spaces.

How to remove mold/mildew staining (bleach-clean method):

  1. Mix: 1 cup household bleach + 1/4 cup mild soap per 1 gallon water

  2. Spray the entire area (not just the spot)

  3. Let it soak 15 minutes

  4. Gently clean with a sponge, clean towel, or very soft brush

  5. Rinse thoroughly

  6. Air dry

Cascadia caution: Protect surrounding materials when using bleach—bleach can discolor non-performance textiles, finishes, and nearby surfaces.

Indoor Outdura Upholstery Cleaning (Yes—Outdura works indoors too)

For indoor upholstery, sunrooms, screened porches, and covered outdoor spaces:

  1. Light mist mild soap + water

  2. Gently agitate seam-to-seam with a sponge or very soft brush

  3. Rinse thoroughly

  4. Blot moisture with a clean towel (or wet-vac seam-to-seam)

  5. Air dry

  6. Repeat rinse/blot until all soap residue is gone

Helpful Hints (Read This Before You Grab a Brush)

  • Clean spills quickly for best stain removal

  • Avoid hard bristle brushes or abrasive scrubbing

  • Air dry only (no dryer; no heat blasting)

  • Protect nearby surfaces if using bleach

  • Rinse thoroughly—soap residue is the enemy

  • For routine care: brush off pollen/dirt regularly + do a seasonal wash

Cleaning Situation

Cleaning Solution / Ratio

Step-by-Step (Short)

Notes for Outdoor Cushions

Fresh liquid spill (drink, juice, rain splash)

Quick spot clean

Mild soap + water (light mix)

Blot (don’t rub) → Spray soap/water → Rinse thoroughly → Air dry

Rinsing prevents soap residue that can attract dirt and cause rings.

Oil-based stain (sunscreen, grease, salad dressing)

Absorb + clean

Cornstarch first, then mild soap + water

Apply absorbent 15–30 min → Lift off → Clean with soap/water → Rinse thoroughly → Air dry

If stain persists, repeat. Use a fabric-safe degreaser carefully and rinse very well.

Outdoor cushions with removable covers (routine wash)

Hand wash (recommended)

1/4 cup mild soap per 1 gallon lukewarm water

Soak/apply → Lightly agitate → Rinse thoroughly → Air dry

Use a very soft brush only—avoid abrasion.

Outdoor cushions with removable covers (machine wash)

Machine wash (if construction allows)

Cold water, delicate cycle, mild detergent

Close zippers → Wash cold/delicate → Air dry

Only do this if removing the cover won’t damage cushion construction.

Non-removable outdoor upholstery (fixed cushions)

Seam-to-seam cleaning

1/4 cup mild soap per 1 gallon lukewarm water

Apply → Let soak → Soft brush seam-to-seam → Rinse thoroughly → Air dry

Clean the entire panel to avoid water rings and uneven drying.

Mold & mildew (humid climates, shaded patios)

Bleach wash (as directed)

1 cup bleach + 1/4 cup mild soap per 1 gallon water

Spray entire area → Soak 15 min → Gently clean → Rinse thoroughly → Air dry

Mildew grows on dirt/pollen—regular brushing helps prevent it.

Indoor Outdura upholstery (routine cleaning)

Light mist + seam-to-seam agitation

Mild soap + water (spray bottle)

Mist → Lightly agitate seam-to-seam → Rinse → Blot/wet-vac → Air dry

Repeat rinse/blot until all soap residue is removed.
