Sunbrella® is one of the easiest outdoor cushion fabrics to live with—because performance is built into the fiber, not just sprayed on as a surface finish. The biggest secret to keeping your Sunbrella outdoor cushions looking new is simple: brush off dry debris often and clean spills fast. The longer dirt, pollen, sunscreen, or food sits on fabric, the more time it has to settle in. Below is our “real life patio” cleaning guide for Sunbrella upholstery fabric used on replacement patio cushions, outdoor seat cushions, back cushions, and throw pillows.

When something just happened (drink, sauce, sunscreen, muddy paw print):
Blot—don’t rub liquid spills with a clean, dry cloth.
For oil-based spills, sprinkle an absorbent (like cornstarch) over the spot, let it pull up the oil, then lift it off with a straight edge.
Spray with a mild soap + water cleaning mix (details below).
Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap residue.
Air dry only.
Why we say “rinse thoroughly” a thousand times: leftover soap can attract dirt and leave rings—especially on cushions that live outside.

If your cushion covers are removable and your manufacturer confirms they can be removed safely:

Oil stains need two steps:
Absorb first (cornstarch or similar), then brush/lift off
Clean using mild soap + water, rinse, air dry
If the stain still persists, use an oil stain remover (or a strong degreaser), then rinse thoroughly

Sunbrella doesn’t “feed” mildew, but mildew can grow on dirt and organic debris left on the surface—especially in humid, shaded areas.

Mix 1 cup bleach + 1/4 cup mild soap per 1 gallon water
Spray the entire area (not just the spot)
Let it soak 15 minutes
Gently clean using a sponge, clean towel, or very soft bristle brush
Rinse thoroughly
Air dry
For severe growth, bleach quantities may be increased (use common sense and protect surrounding materials).

For indoor upholstery or covered spaces:
Light mist mild soap + water onto the fabric
Gently agitate seam-to-seam with a sponge or very soft brush
Rinse thoroughly
Blot moisture with a clean towel
Wet-vac or blot excess water seam-to-seam
Air dry
Repeat rinse/blot until all soap residue is gone

After years outside, or after repeated deep cleanings, you may notice water no longer beads on the surface. That doesn’t mean the fabric is “bad”—it just means the water-repellent finish may need refreshing.
How to re-treat:
Clean the fabric thoroughly (choose the method above)
Allow fabric to completely air dry
Apply a fabric protector/repellent outdoors in a well-ventilated area, following the product label instructions

| Cleaning Situation | Best Method | Cleaning Solution / Ratio | Step-by-Step (Short) | Notes for Outdoor Cushions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fresh liquid spill (drink, juice, rain splash) | Quick spot clean | Mild soap + water (light mix) | Blot (don’t rub) → Spray soap/water → Rinse thoroughly → Air dry | Rinsing prevents soap residue that can attract dirt and cause rings |
| Oil-based stain (sunscreen, grease, salad dressing) | Absorb + clean | Cornstarch first, then mild soap + water | Apply absorbent → Lift off → Clean with soap/water → Rinse thoroughly → Air dry | If stain persists, use an oil stain remover/degreaser and rinse thoroughly |
| Outdoor cushions with removable covers (routine wash) | Hand wash (recommended) | 1/4 cup mild soap per 1 gallon lukewarm water | Soak/apply → Lightly agitate → Rinse thoroughly → Air dry | Use a very soft brush only—avoid abrasion |
| Outdoor cushions with removable covers (machine wash) | Machine wash (if construction allows) | Cold water, delicate cycle, mild detergent (optional: 1 cup bleach for severe mildew) | Close zippers → Wash cold/delicate → Air dry | Confirm cushion cover removal is safe before unzipping/removing |
| Non-removable outdoor upholstery (fixed cushions) | Seam-to-seam cleaning | 1/4 cup mild soap per 1 gallon lukewarm water | Apply → Let soak → Soft brush → Rinse thoroughly → Air dry | Clean the entire panel (seam to seam) to avoid water rings |
| Mold & mildew (outdoor cushions, humid climates) | Bleach wash (as directed) | 1 cup bleach + 1/4 cup mild soap per 1 gallon water | Spray entire area → Soak 15 min → Gently clean → Rinse thoroughly → Air dry | Mildew grows on dirt/pollen—regular brushing helps prevent it |
| Indoor Sunbrella upholstery (routine cleaning) | Light mist + seam-to-seam agitation | Mild soap + water (spray bottle) | Mist → Lightly agitate seam-to-seam → Rinse thoroughly → Blot/wet-vac → Air dry | Repeat rinse/blot until all soap residue is removed |
| Restoring water repellency (after deep cleaning or years outside) | Retreatment | Fabric protector/repellent (follow label) | Deep clean → Fully air dry → Apply outdoors in ventilated area | Apply only to clean, dry fabric for best results |
